Basic Mac Functions - Installing Apps, Printers, Network Drives, and How to Use a Mac

1. Finder
        a. Finder can be found through the magnifying glass icon in the top right corner of the screen
        b. You can quickly search anything you want to open on the Mac (apps, specific settings, etc.) through Finder

Finder is located in the top right corner of the screen as a magnifying glass icon.
2. Launchpad
        a. Launchpad can be searched through Finder and displays an aerial view of all apps downloaded on the Mac

3. Self Service
        a. Self Service is used by the User to install apps without admin credentials
        b. It can be compared to Software Center on Windows Devices
        c. This document shows how to access and search in Self Service: Mac - Installing an Application from Self Service
        d. Self Service is also used to Install PrintersPrinting - Adding a Network Printer to a Mac

4. Connecting to eduroam
        a. All UWGB-owned MacBooks should be connected to eduroam - they should NOT be connected to other networks
        b. This document shows how to connect a MacBook to eduroam: eduroam - Connecting on Mac

5. Entering a User Code for Ricoh Printers
        a. This document shows how to enter a user code for Ricoh printers: Mac - Entering a User Code for a Ricoh Printer and Hold Print

6. Mapping Network Drives
        a. This document details how to map network drives to a Mac: Mac - Connecting to Network Shares
        b. Network drives should be mapped in this format: smb://servername.uwgb.edu/share
                i. Example: smb://fpsa.uwgb.edu/compserv$
        c. M Drives should be mapped in this format: smb://fpsa/first letter of last name/username
                i. Example: smb://fpsa/g/gloshenz

7. First Time Login for User - applies if the User receives a new MacBook or a temporary MacBook
        a. On Ethernet, sign in with gbadmin and sign out
        b. Still on Ethernet, have the User sign in - you MUST sign in with gbadmin before the User signs in      

8. Connecting to GlobalProtect VPN
        a. The VPN can be connected to by clicking on the "globe" icon in the top right corner of the screen
        b. ***Make sure the portal address is laptopvpn.uwgb.edu - safeconnect.uwgb.edu is for personal Macs
        c. For credentials, the User will provide their UWGB username and password

Global Protect VPN is located in the top right corner of the screen as a globe icon.

9. Clearing Browser Cache and Cookies
        a. This document shows how to clear cache and cookies in various browsers: Clearing Browser Cache and Cookies (wisc.edu)

10. Activity Monitor 
        a. Activity Monitor can be compared to Windows Task Manager
        b. To open Activity Monitor, search "Activity Monitor" in Finder

11. Jabber
        a. This document shows how to install and set up Jabber on a Mac: Jabber - Setup for Mac
        b. ***Users who have never used Jabber before will need to have an account set up by INF Unified Comm

12. Beyond Trust - First Time Login
        a. When someone remotes into a Mac for the first time using Beyond Trust, an "Action Required" pop up will show
        b. This document shows how to alter Settings to allow remoting in: Beyond Trust - Connecting as a Customer (Mac)
        c. Setting must be altered by the End User - the document listed is External for the End User to view

Password Syncing Issues

***NOTE: If the User is able to login by entering their username and password but NOT when their profile is displayed with only the password text field open, this is a password syncing issue***

Sometimes when Mac Users update their UWGB passwords, their MacBook does not accept the new password at the login screen - there are a few factors that can lead to this issue: 

1. The User changed their password through the link provided in the automated password-expiration emails - they should NOT change their password through this link

2. The GBIT Service Desk changed the User's password - the User should change their own password for proper syncing

3. The User changed their password not connected to the GlobalProtect VPN
        a. To connect to GlobalProtect VPN, view this section: Connecting to GlobalProtect VPN

To sync the User's new password to their MacBook, follow these steps:

1. Connect the MacBook to Ethernet and sign in with gbadmin - make sure the Ethernet is connected by going to System Settings > Network
        a. ***Apple does not give you an indicator if you are connected to Ethernet through the wifi symbol

2a. If the User knows their previous UWGB password, sign out of gbadmin and have them sign in with their previous password
        a. After successfully logging in with their old password, have the User sign in with their new password 

2b. If the User does not know their previous UWGB password, change the User's password under the gbadmin account using the instructions in this document: How to Change Your Password on Your Device (Faculty\Staff Only)
        a. Log out of gbadmin and have the User sign in with their new password

3. ***In either Step 2 scenario, make sure the User can sign into their account with the new password not connected to Ethernet

Password Syncing Issues - Keychain

1. If the steps from the Password Syncing Issues section don't work, clear the Mac's Keychain using these documents:

2. If the User has a pop up from Keychain asking them to sign in, the Mac - Troubleshooting Password Sync Issue document will also resolve this issue

***NOTE: Clearing the User's Keychain with delete all saved passwords from their account***
